While it’s been relocated to a different area within the backlot and expanded due to popularity it’s still a ‘must-see’ when visiting Universal Studios Hollywood.

The backlot tour is located in the lower lot of the park. To get here you’ll want to take the multiple escalators down from the upper lot in which you will arrive at when entering the park.
The backlot tour lasts between 40 and 60 minutes depending on the ongoing attractions, filming and wait times during the tour.

The attraction is suitable for all ages, although younger guests may find this particular section of the backlot tour scary.
If you’re worried your little travellers might get scared then try sitting at the front of the tour rather than the back as when “Norman” comes towards you he heads to the back rather than the front.
You can use the Universal Studios mobile application or check any of the screens around the park to find out the wait time for the backlot tour at any given time.
Nearby the Studio Directory you should also be able to see a map or directions overhead that should direct you as to how to get to the lower lot where the backlot tour is located.
Aside from the Bates Motel, you’ll also see facades from popular shows such as The Good Place & Desperate Housewives.

This is a real, live, working set so you may see some celebrities or pass filming for a TV show or upcoming blockbuster – although I’ve been on the ride a number of times and I’m still yet to see that happen (although I did catch Mario Lopez filming an advert at the front of the park once).
During the Studio Tour, there are also two different 3D showings. You’ll be able to pick up your 3D glasses near the end of the queue for the ride (don’t forget to drop them off again in the buckets provided at the end).
